The focus of this paper is on the multiple facets that metacognition can have in clinical medicine. Firstly, I present the philosophical perspective on metacognition and I outline the role metacognition can play for a patient’s biological response while facing a chronic illness. Secondly, I propose a model for physicians to use metacognition as a tool for how to store and retrieve medical information and for preventing burnout. The core argument for using metacognition as a tool, is to decrease the medical-care-crisis level that exists ever since the communication with the patient became less important because of hi-tech medical investigations.
